Jan Foss of Incline Village passed away in late July 2012. She was an extremely talented painter who held several watercolor classes year-round, even more in her later years. She was in love with Lake Tahoe, and her students and life. Lake Tahoe is blessed to have our angel Jan grace our presence. ♥
When Jan opened her studio nine years ago, it was a dream come true. Now she’s sharing her dream and techniques for capturing the softness and delicacies of nature.
Jan’s dimension of paintings are vast like her gratitude for living in Lake Tahoe and her artistic talent. Primarily known as a wild flower artist, Jan also paints landscapes, clouds and angels. Yes, she has been painting people’s personal angels for years.
To share her joy and love of painting, Jan offers several water color classes year-round and has left an indelible impression on the North Lake Tahoe art scene.
In September 2010, Jan won an Honorable Mention award at the Watercolor Association of Sacramento Horizons (WASH) annual exhibit for her painting Sunlit Cannas shown here. Jan has won many awards for her work during her 25 year painting career. “But it is always a thrill to win!” she says.

Artist’s Statement:
My paintings are inspired by my garden, my travels and the beautiful Lake Tahoe area. But, I feel my best paintings happen when I allow them to flow from within, just enjoying the process of putting color on paper without worrying about the end result. To me, flowers are one of the most beautiful elements of nature and watercolor is the perfect medium to capture their softness and delicate beauty. I have been told many times that my paintings are very calming and give a feeling of peace. Knowing that my work can have that kind of effect brings me great satisfaction.
About the Artist:
A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Jan Foss has been painting watercolors for 22 years. This award winning artist is known for her soft, delicate florals. Since moving to Lake Tahoe in 1998, landscapes are now a frequent subject for her as well.
Inspired by her surroundings, she tries to capture the essence of Lake Tahoe, evoking a feeling of peace and serenity.
Jan’s exploration of the color red has continued this past year, but she has also been experimenting with some abstract techniques and trying to capture a feeling of light in her landscapes.
Jan teaches watercolor classes and workshops in the Lake Tahoe/Reno area, Minnesota and other areas. Her students love her step-by-step demonstrations, her willingness to share her watercolor knowledge and her boundless enthusiasm.
