Matisse and Picasso are coming to Tahoe.
Join Brigid Barton, professor of Art History at Santa Clara University, for an evening talk on “Modernist Artists in Provence”, including Renoir and the late Picasso on September 29.
Generations of French modernists from the late nineteenth century to the era after World War II focused their artistic attention on the south of France, particularly on Provence. Cezanne, Renoir, Matisse, Bonnard, and Picasso spent many years there, with others coming for shorter stays.
The talks will introduce the audience to the region and these artists exploring how each responded to the climate and culture of the south. Every class will include original slides taken recently on site.
Professor Barton’s special area of interest is nineteenth- and twentieth-century Europe, particularly the art of France and Germany. In addition to Santa Clara, she has taught in the Continuing Studies Program at Stanford University and lectures frequently at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
The free talk will take place at Sierra Nevada College’s Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, room 139, from 7-8 pm on September 29.
