mix1.JPGThe sign of summer in Tahoe. Gardens.

Since we only have 5 months, we go crazy with our gardens. And why not?

They attract humming birds and butterflies and big smiles. And, it’s fun riding around seeing all kinds of gardens from the overtly outrageous to quaint English gardens. Just as individual as the people that live here.

One positive trend becoming more prevalent is the use of native plants.

We often collect seeds during our hikes and figure if they can survive out there in the wild, they can definitely make it at home.

There are lots of benefits going native:

  • Less water - so we can go play!
  • Less maintenance - so we can go play!
  • Less run-off into the lake
  • Less time and $ - so we can go play!
  • Huge explosion of color from indigenous plants like bright purple lupine and iris, orange columbine and yellow daisies
  • So enjoy your Tahoe garden….for a few more months. Winter is just around the corner!

    Did you know….

If your property was affected by the Angora fire, you can sign up to receive up to $500 of native vegetation and receive $1 per square foot for planting water-efficient landscaping.

For more information on the plant giveaway and vegetation plans, contact the Tahoe Resource Conservation District hotline at (530) 543-1501, ext. 113, or Susie Kocher at (530) 542-2571.
