Vampire power. Phantom loads.
Sounds scary.
It IS.
These scary terms refer to the extra electricity, or standby power, our home appliances (and office equipment) consume even when they are turned off.
Standby power can really add up. The cost of Phantom Loads to the U.S. is huge:
- $8 billion/year
- 20 power plants
- 36 million tons of carbon dioxide
- More pollution than 12 million cars
TVs and VCRs alone cost the U.S. $2 billion/year in lost electricity.
Really turning off devices when not in use can drastically reduce the amount of the electricity needed to run your home or business. And, it helps the planet.
Solution: Buy a power adapter with a turn off switch and hook up all your appliances.
