One of the country’s top professional bicycling stage races - Tour de Nez - will be headquartered at Northstar June 17 - 22, 2008.
In addition to the 6 day stage races, there’s plenty of riding for amateurs and all levels of cycling fun hogs.
Pro cyclists will vie for thousands in prize money, while cycling enthusiasts of all abilities can ride with cycling legends and enjoy a full schedule of events that include a bike decorating contest, bike parade and kid’s races.
Started 16 years ago to celebrate the anniversary of Reno’s first coffee house, Deux Gros Nez, the Tour de Nez has grown from a Masters Twilight Criterium to a six-day cycling festival.
The Lake Tahoe events kick off on Thursday, June 19th in downtown Truckee with the Biggest Little Kids Race, Clunker Classic and Pro Criterium. The race continues throughout the weekend at Northstar-at-Tahoe. Here are a few local classics not to miss.
Clunker Classic, Thursday, June 19
The Tour de Nez Clunker Classic is a race for those riders that aren’t looking to break any speed records, tackle any epic climbs or even make it over the finish line. Created over ten years ago for the recreational rider who hydrates with Pabst Blue Ribbon and has a habit of getting waylaid at local watering holes, the Clunker Classic is a wild one-mile ride for the “other” cyclists. It’s a free race, but donations are gladly accepted on behalf The Tour de Nez Foundation-a non-profit benefiting local bike programs. For more information call 775-287-3599.
Art Bike Parade and Corporate Challenge, June 21 @ 1pm at Northstar
This is a great way to get involved. Get a bike for $25 from Kiwanis. Decorate it and then bring it to the Art Bike Parade contest on Saturday, June 21. The $25 benefits the Kiwanis Bikes for Kids Programs. All Art Bikes will be on display at the Kiwanis booth from 10 am to 8 pm.
