Greg Sarris writes about the lives and stories of Native American people from the Southwest and West.
Tahoe Arts Project (TAP) is bringing 2 of his short stories to life on March 28.
Greg is Professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is an award winning Native American Author. He is also an elected chief of the Coast Miwok Nation.
Word for Word, a professional theater company, will be performing every word Greg has written from these two short stories:
“When Tom Smith Caused the 1906 Earthquake”
The retelling of a family folktale. Who is the most powerful medicine man - Tom Smith or Big Jose? Animals talk, fire walks, many strange things happen - but Tom Smith isn’t satisfied with everyday magic. He wants to be the most powerful. His out-of-control desire spreads strong magic all the way to San Francisco…do you hear the rumbling in the hills?
“Ancestor”
When 15-year-old R.D.’s grandmother dies, his world is torn apart. His mother can’t care for him, and he wonders where he will go. R.D. looks to the stories of his Native American ancestors and finds a key to his future. Through his grandmother’s tales he learns that, while immediate family can’t always be there for you, your extended family of past generations can serve as a guide, pointing out the way.
