The Tudor English Pub by Jenn Gleckman

The last time I set foot in here it was still legal to smoke in bars in California. Back then it was the prototypical British pub, smoky, dark, with the odd accented barman or barmaid. The beers were imported, the food greasy, and there were always a few expats or UK tourists seeking the familiar.

Times have changed. There’s new ownership, which means some positive changes. We headed over there for drinks and dinner not long ago, and I was pleasantly surprised. The wine by the glass list is much bigger than the old ‘merlot/chard/white zin’ options of before, and the food menu is much more creative. Seared ahi appetizers, kobe beef burgers, lamb shepherd’s pie…along with the traditional fish and chips.

The decor is still dark and dreary, and while some of the booths are in dire need of replacement, the food and drink options are enough of an improvement that I’ll be returning again. I should also note that the downstairs restaurant, formerly known as The Dory’s Oar, is currently being renovated and will reopen in December as a wine bar. More to come on that, no doubt…..
